A base layer is a crucially important factor in comfortable layering: it is the layer that is in direct contact with your skin and transfers moisture to the next layer. Especially in hiking use and cold conditions, Merino wool is unbeatable: it evens out fluctuations in temperature, keeping you comfy even during breaks. It has natural anti-odour characteristics and requires much less washing than synthetic materials. Merino base layers come in different thicknesses. A common term to describe this attribute is material weight: a piece of Merino apparel with a material weight of 160g/m² is nice and light for pretty much year-round use, while one with a material weight of 220/m² is pretty much a dedicated piece of winter gear.
