Hiking routes in the area range from short strolls to a long section of the UKK route, where Finland’s oldest hiking happening takes place each fall. Well cared for skiing routes offer dozens of kilometers of skiing in varied terrain. The Hiidenportti gully and the surrounding national park in the heart of the Sotkamo wilderness is an impressive sight. The area also contains interesting aspects of cultural history. The map also contains the Kuhmo Teerisuo - Lososuo swamp areas with their hiking routes and the Peurajärvi area in Nurmes. Tiilikkajärvi at the border of Northern Savonia and Kainuu has been a border for ages: the lake still boasts the border rock from 1595. The national park formed here some centuries later, offers sand beaches, ridges, swamps and deep forests. In the Rokua district pine forests you find easy hiking paths and excellent cross country skiing possibilities. Lichen-covered dunes and small sinkhole pond tell about the turmoil of the last ice age. Rokua is, together with Oulujärvi, part of the international Geopark network. Manamansalo island is the most definitive area of the Oulujärvi hiking area, and easy to reach even with a car. Sandy beaches are perfect for camping and sun bathing.
