With its 7 cm loft, the Ultra R1 is ready for comfortable nights in summer and indoor use. As there is no insulation, the pad packs down very small and is light compared to its loft. With an R value of 1.6, this pad has an Exped lowest recommended temperature rating of +10ºC. Blowing would draw moisture into the pad and the use of a pump bag reduces fainting. A word or two about the three main types of Exped pads: Ultra pads boast the lightest surface fabrics and smallest weight and packing size. Versa is the middle-of-the-road alternative, with regular materials. Dura pads have a reinforced bottom fabric, making them suitable for professional level use and demanding conditions. The number next to the letter R is a rounded version of the pad’s actual insulation. 1 is for summer use, 2 and 3 for 2 and 3 season use, and anything 4 or above is good for year-round use.
